with one of the nation’s largest stray animal populations, the Southern Nevada community faces a difficult pet overpopulation challenge. upwards of 40,000 homeless domestic animals enter area animal shelters each year, and like many of their counterparts across the country, rescue facilities surrounding “Sin City” often face issues of limited space and a shortage of resources.
fortunately, by ramping up life-saving efforts, educating the community, enlisting large numbers of volunteers, and increasing fundraising efforts, The Animal Foundation, Nevada’s largest animal shelter and pet adoption agency, is saving lives by spearheading a 5-year plan to save all healthy and treatable animals entering its facility. it’s one of the reason’s we’re very proud to announce them as our July sWheat Shares partner!
founded in 1978 as a small, low-cost spay and neuter clinic, The Animal Foundation grew quickly and, by the mid-90’s, was the contracted shelter for the City of Las Vegas. in the mid-2000s, the organization became the contracted shelter for City of North Las Vegas and Clark County. The Animal Foundation took in more than 33,000 animals in 2014.
The July sWheat Shares donation of 2,000 pounds of sWheat Scoop will specifically benefit The Animal Foundation’s Pets for Life program, a grant-funded community outreach initiative, supporting the local underserved community. using a comprehensive grassroots approach, the program helps communities that — because of economic, social or cultural factors — don’t have access to veterinary care, pet care information, resources or related services, despite great need.
“The Animal Foundation’s Pets for Life programs provides members of local, targeted, underserved communities with the resources and tools they need to keep their pets in their homes — and out of the shelter — for life,” says Bryan Goodwin, Pets for Life coordinator for The Animal Foundation. “we are truly grateful to Swheat Scoop for this donation as it will allow us to provide at-risk cat parents from low-income communities with the cat litter supplies they so desperately need but may not be able to afford.”
